Decorate the children's room with cozy details

Decorating a child's room can be a challenge – precisely because there are so many possibilities! How do you create an environment that both invites play and at the same time provides space for relaxation? We asked Åsa Gramén, interior designer, stylist and photographer for the interior design company KYD - KillingYourDarlings, to share her best interior design tips for children's rooms.

What are your best tips for creating a cozy and safe children's room?

    – Few people are better than children at utilizing all the space in their rooms. This is where they play, climb, do crafts and sleep. There are many different activities that require their own specific interior design. When decorating for little ones, I think you should start by both stimulating play and at the same time creating a safe place to unwind! It's about finding a balance between function and atmosphere – a mix of playfulness and coziness!

    – A children's room should be cozy, practical, easy to clean and inviting to play. Storage is key – it must be accessible to the children! I like to mix visible and hidden storage so that the room becomes both a place to gather things and play, but can also be easily cleaned away to create a quiet place before nightfall.

How do you think about color choices when decorating a child's room?

    – Although colorful and vibrant colors are associated with children's rooms, it is important to remember that sleep is the main function of the room. Feel free to paint the children's room in warm, earthy and neutral colors – it is calming and invites both relaxation and learning. Colors such as beige, green, blue and soft gray tones create a peaceful base in the room!

What should you consider when choosing furniture for a children's room?

    – Invest in furniture that will last a long time, both in style and function. Then add interior details that can change as your child grows. Think sustainable and timeless!

What materials do you prefer for a more cozy and soft feel?

    – I love decorating children's rooms with different textiles. It's both beautiful and contributes to sound absorption, which can be an advantage when there's play and noise in the room! Decorating with textiles is also an easy way to change a room. Soft pillows or curtains in linen, for example, make the room more personal. Invest in rugs, bed canopies and cozy bedding to create a place where children really want to sleep.

What tips do you have for lighting in a child's room?

    – Always furnish with more light than you think is needed. Children are often not as fond of “cozy lighting” as we adults, but they want to be able to see what they are doing properly. A sturdy ceiling lamp that reaches all corners of the room is therefore important for being able to play and see the floor well. If the room has a desk or craft corner, make sure to have direct lighting there – either in the form of a table lamp or an adjustable wall lamp.

    – For us adults, decorative lamps and mood lighting are often the most fun to decorate with. These can be added when the general and practical lighting is in place. String lights in different materials and colors can, for example, create a nice eye-catcher and contribute to a soft feeling in the room.

What do you think about wall decorations, such as posters and paintings?

    – The details are what put the finishing touch. Here you can create a harmonious feeling, inspire learning, awaken imagination or just add something charming. I like to choose posters and paintings from Designed Posters when I decorate my clients' homes. It's best when you mix cute motifs with educational motifs, for example the poster The Alphabet gives a nice feeling. My tip is to dare to play with different posters, but invest in timeless frames that will last a long time. When the child gets older, you can easily replace the motifs over time.
